The Season of Love at Liberty High School

The+Season+of+Love+at+Liberty+High+School

Buying candy for our loved ones during Valentine’s Day allows us to show them our love for them. At Liberty High School Mr. Judd, with the help of Catholic Charities, student government, and some seniors, organized Cupid’s Corner to allow seniors to raise funds for their senior activities, and at the same time do something for students to connect. The concept of Cupid’s Corner is that anyone can buy candy bags for their friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, or even a teacher who you appreciate during Valentine’s week, so that it can be delivered to you on Valentine’s Day.  Cupid’s Corner was created for many reasons, but one of the major ones was to create an even stronger bond between the students at Liberty High School by letting them buy candy for each other during this week.

Mr. Judd, a teacher, at Liberty High School, says “We wanted to do a fundraiser for the seniors, but we wanted to do something fun that will give the students a chance to connect during Valentine’s week and so we thought about it, and we thought, hey, maybe people could buy candy for each other and we asked Ms. Huegel if we could deliver to the classes.  And she said yes, just this one day a year. Normally we can’t go in the classes and interrupt them, but for this activity she will let us do this, so it is a lot of fun.”

Oscar Castillo, the Vice President of student government at Liberty High School says, “Organizing this event is always a challenge because we have to consider various factors such as whether the candy bags are worth the price we are selling them for, and if they are affordable for the students. To prepare for Cupid’s Corner, the student government held a meeting to discuss how we can make the event more fun and encourage students to buy the bags. This year, we made the candy bags more valuable by adding extra items like pencils, sharpeners, and a teddy bear, all for $10. At lunchtime, we played music and danced to create a fun atmosphere and encourage more sales. It has been successful so far and we are happy with the outcome.”

Many students buy the candy bags for someone they appreciate or a person who helps them.   Marieme Diouf, a student at Liberty High School says, “ I bought a packet of candy for a friend that always helps me with my homework. I didn’t know about Cupid’s Corner and when I saw it, I just thought why not buy some chocolate for her, she’s always helping me with my homework and never asks me for anything in return, so I decided to buy a $10 pack of candy for her to shows her my gratitude.”

I am hopeful that everybody will enjoy their chocolate during this special day.
