Did you know that AI can create its own language? In 2017, Facebook researchers were shocked during an experiment, when two chatbots started communicating in a language they had developed themselves; One that humans cannot understand. Are we prepared to see how AI is slowly outsmarting us, humans? An example of this is that you can ask ChatGPT literally anything. From an essay to create a song especially for you. Artificial Intelligence is no longer fiction, it is already causing great impact in our daily lives. Even though experts say that AI is a great advancement in technology, others are afraid that it could spread misinformation, replace human jobs and consequently surpass human intelligence.
Despite its advantages, AI also presents challenges and ethical concerns. The automation of jobs raises questions about the future of work, as machines increasingly replace human labor in various industries. Many people fear that AI will take over things that are traditionally done by humans, leading to job displacement, while other people believe that AI will serve as an assistant rather than a replacement. This concern is often present in fields such as education, where AI-tools are becoming more common. When asked about the risk of AI replacing human jobs, Mr. Djamaliddinov, a teacher at Liberty High School, said, “Yes.” He further explained, “It would not replace our direct teaching, but it can replace parts of it like grading or planning lessons. I can see AI doing the grading for us.” Mr. Dj’s perspective highlights an important debate: Does the role of a teacher extend beyond repetitive tasks like grading? Teaching involves human interaction, mentorship, and the ability to adapt to a student’s emotions and thoughts. When asked furthermore how he uses AI, Mr. Dj said, “When I’m planning my activities, I use chatGPT.” He also said, “Why make my life harder if ChatGPT can make it easier?”
The rise of deepfake technology and AI-generated misinformation further complicates the landscape, making it crucial for governments and tech companies to implement responsible AI policies. As AI becomes more integrated into society, balancing innovation with ethical considerations is essential, but when I asked Mr. Dj about the government regulating AI, he said, “It should not be regulated. I don’t think regulating AI will do anything. It’s how can you control AI? If you block it, that is not regulating.” This shows that even if the government tries to regulate AI, they will never be able to fully control it. This is due to the fact that AI can be used wrongly in many ways and consequently, it can have various consequences and negative effects on people.
For instance, when asked about the negative effects that Artificial Intelligence has on students, Dylan, a High School student, said, “It leads you to procrastinate because now students no longer put in the effort to complete certain tasks; instead, they choose an easier method, which is AI, even though they know this negatively affects their learning process.” This shows that students often rely on AI too much, sometimes they don’t even take the time to double check if the information that this is giving them is real or not.
But not everything is bad. It is clear that AI is indeed one of the most exciting advancements in human history. It holds the potential to revolutionize numerous fields, from healthcare and education to transportation and entertainment. In healthcare, for example, AI is already being used to analyze medical data and provide insights that can lead to faster, more accurate diagnoses, and personalized treatment plans. It can also assist in drug discovery by predicting how different compounds will react in the body, speeding up the process of bringing life-saving medications to market. It can help in the day-to-day lives of everyone. For instance, I asked a father the following question: How do you think AI has improved your day-to-day life? To which, he said, “As a father, I see AI as something that can make our daily lives much easier and more efficient, which is a big help, especially with everything we have to juggle. For example, with AI-powered smart assistants, I can set reminders for appointments, groceries, or family events without having to write everything down. It also helps with managing the house, etc.”
As we continue to explore AI’s capabilities, it will undoubtedly lead to even more innovations that can make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone.
