The government should regulate sugar in products!

Italo Villanueva

Have you ever wondered if what you eat is healthy or not? Well, many people out there don’t care about what they eat and they just keep eating tons of unhealthy food, yet it is not their fault. If someone is guilty of this happening are food companies, and the government. They can regulate the substances like sugar they put into products and make healthy foods for people, but they  don’t care if it is healthy or not because they just want to make profit from selling all these unhealthy foods.

We are being poisoned with too much sugar by buying all these products they sell in stores such as chocolate, candies, cookies, and drinks. And we buy them because we don’t know how bad they are for our health. The biggest issue about this happening is that  it causes people to get sick from diseases like higher blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. And we must do something to stop it!

The government should reduce the amount of sugar that food companies put into products, especially because most of the sugar is added.

The food and drinks we consume are not healthy because all the sugar that is added into these products such as sodas, Chocolate milk, Granola and Ice coffee etc, makes it bad for our health. In fact products that you don’t even think contain sugar, sugar is often hidden. While food companies keep making you believe that what they sell is healthy and the best products ever, you’re  just intoxicating  yourself by eating food or drinking something that is not healthy. Added sugar is just like any other drug that has a negative impact in our society. Public health is also at risk  with the nonsupervisory of sugar added in products.

According to Heathline “ A large part of your daily sugar intake is hidden inside various packaged and processed foods, many of which are marketed as healthy.” When you buy foods, you probably buy them because you think they are healthy but the truth is that they are not, there are tons of foods that are not healthy because they contain extreme amounts of sugar that are all hidden. You have to know what you are buying. In the United States, more than two-thirds of the population is overweight, and half of them are obese. About 80 percent of those who are obese will have diabetes or metabolic disorders and will have shortened lives, according to the UCSF authors of the commentary, led by Robert Lustig.” It is unbelievable to see how many people are being negatively affected with serious issues that can even cost their lives. Overall many people don’t even know why  they are suffering from diabetes, and metabolic disorders because many people don’t expect that buying products such as sodas, cereals and cookies, which contain lots of sugar will harm their health. Based on The Daily Meal website, “A single, 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola contains no fat and no protein. Its 140 calories come from a whopping 39 grams of pure sugar. And A Caramelized Honey Latte from Starbucks  not only has as much sugar as a can of Coke, but, in fact, it has more. Unfortunately it won’t affect your health the first days you consume these products but overtime you will see yourself in very bad conditions. These are not the only products, there are tons of products that contain serious amounts of sugar that are bad for your health. However there are many people out there who love sugar and they just don’t care about how bad it is or the problems it can cause. In spite of that, I believe the government should do something against it. The Government should do something to stop the harm added sugar is causing to people’s health.

The risks of getting heart failure and cancer when consuming too much sugar are very high. The time when you come to realize what is happening with your health can be too late. Even when you try to have a diet on what you eat, there can always be sugar present. If you think that soft drinks and fruit drinks can be a perfect diet, you might be wrong because those drinks always have added sugar even though they are made from natural ingredients. As illustrated by Too Much Sugar Can Break Your Heart,  “Researchers followed the food habits of 42,000 Swedish men over 12 years and found that men who drank at least two sweetened beverages a day had a 23% higher risk of going into heart failure.” If we had less sugar in the products we consume everyday people would live more healthy without any health issues. NBCnews.com states that “Americans consume on average more than 600 calories per day from added sugar, equivalent to a whopping 40 teaspoons.” When there is a law that prohibits food companies from adding less sugar to their products people will live more healthy. A As inferred by Harvard Health “Adult men take in an average of 24 teaspoons of added sugar per day, according to the National Cancer Institute. That’s equal to 384 calories.” This example is significant because it demonstrates how people consume so much sugar that is more than what is healthy for our body. We should be eating healthy and consuming products that don’t kill us. It’s also the government’s responsibility to keep people safe but it seems like they are not taking this problem about sugar seriously.

Sugar can be an addictive drug for many people. When there is no regulation on how much sugar is added in each product that is sold, those people who are addicted to sugar or just love sugar will find themselves in a very bad situation with their health because there is nothing that prohibits food companies from adding as much sugar as they want. They care about selling their products and make money but they don’t care about people’s health. It is irrelevant to point out that while food companies make millions of dollars from all the products they sell, people who buy them get diseases like heart failure, liver failure, inflammation and cancer, and they don’t even have enough money to pay for medicine.  Sugar Should Be Regulated as Toxin, Researches Say, Claims that “Lustig, a medical doctor in UCSF’s Department of Pediatrics, compares added sugar to tobacco and alcohol (coincidentally made from sugar) in that it is addictive, toxic and has a negative impact on society” The fact that sugar can be addictive proves that many people put at risk their health and even their lives. There is no control in the consumption of sugar. The Sweet Danger of Sugar emphasizes that “In a study published in 2014 in JAMA Internal Medicine, Dr. Hu and his colleagues found an association between a high-sugar diet and a greater risk of dying from heart disease. Over the course of the 15-year study, people who got 17% to 21% of their calories from added sugar had a 38% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with those who consumed 8% of their calories as added sugar.” These facts work together to build a case that shows why sugar should be regulated in the United States. Companies have to add less sugar to their products and care more about people’s health. The regulation of sugar can save many people’s lives and keep them healthy.

The government must do something about the amount of sugar that is added into products. I believe that food companies should be taxed for each product containing added sugar. A law for taxing food companies who make products with high amounts of sugar that harm people’s health has to be created now!
