Last Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Bronx Parkchester subway station, the whole platform shook like a mini earthquake as the train was about to come. Trash covered the floor, a sour smell filled the air, and a tired commuter next to me muttered, “This place gets worse every day.” According to the MTA’s 2024 reports, many New York City subway stations are over 100 years old and need repairs. Riders from stations like Union Square, Grand Central, and Queens Plaza often complain about delays, broken tiles, and dirty platforms. New York City subway stations should be fixed and cleaned so people can feel safe, wait comfortably, and not worry about dirt, broken parts, or crowded spaces.
Many subway stations in New York City are damaged or worn, which makes people unsafe. According to Rebuild the Subway System, “New York’s system has lost its luster in international comparisons. It is now far from the world’s most modern urban rail transit system” (October 3, 2024). This evidence shows that New York’s subway is old and falling behind other cities, so riders are using stations that may not be safe. The city must repair these stations so people can travel without worrying about broken or dangerous conditions.
Another issue that needs attention is the overcrowding in many subway stations, which makes it hard for riders to move safely. Based on ISSUE BRIEF, “Many key subway stations have narrow platforms and staircases more appropriate to a system with much lower ridership” (July 2020). This proves that the stations are too small for the number of people who use them today. When platforms and stairs are crowded, it’s easier for people to bump into each other or feel unsafe. Fixing and widening these areas would help everyone move around more safely.
The subway is the heart of New York City, and it deserves better care and attention. It’s time for action. We can share our ideas by joining community meetings, filling out MTA surveys, or contacting local officials to explain what needs to be fixed, such as how to clean up the stations, and expand the subway to make it safer and more comfortable for everyone.
