As students move up in high school, they face different challenges that shape who they are and what they want to do. For Paolo, a senior at Liberty High School, the journey has not been easy. He had to learn a new language and deal with different cultures, and both of these challenges helped him see his future better.
“The challenges I faced to become a senior were understanding English and dealing with the different cultures at school. These experiences pushed me to improve my English and understand my classes and teachers better. They also helped me learn about different cultures, allowing me to share my traditions and customs with others. All these challenges helped me improve my social skills and made me a better person,” Paolo said. He explains that these experiences not only helped him communicate better but also made him more involved in his education and understand the different cultures in his school. When asked what motivates him to study, Paolo said he wants to help society and be recognized for his achievements. “What motivates me to keep studying is my desire to be recognized. I want to be an important person who helps humanity. Since I was young, I have wanted to be recognized by others. Discipline is essential in my education and personal growth. With discipline, you can achieve anything because it makes you responsible and organized,” he explained. Paolo’s words show that he values discipline, not just to reach his goals, but as a guide in his life.
Ms. Morel, an English teacher at Liberty High School, has seen students with language barriers grow and adapt over time. She emphasizes how important it is to have a supportive environment where every student feels valued. “As an English teacher, it is rewarding to see students, especially newcomers, grow and adapt. Ninth grade is a crucial year for these students as they often come with limited English skills but a lot of potential. Many students struggle with English and adjusting to a new culture. They may feel low in confidence and isolated. However, I have seen these students adapt and grow in amazing ways. They build friendships and practice English outside of the classroom. Over time, they become more comfortable speaking in class and using English in different ways. As they improve, they engage more in discussions and share their ideas. By the time they are seniors, many of these students not only speak well but excel in subjects that were once hard for them. A key factor is creating a supportive classroom where mistakes are part of learning and every student’s voice matters.” Ms. Morel also points out that learning English is more than just passing a course. It helps students connect fully, not only at school but also in the community.
Mr. Patterson, the school counselor, believes education goes beyond grades. He says it is important for students to be active in school life and explore interests outside the classroom. “I encourage all my students to practice English as much as possible. Speaking English well helps them not only in high school but also in college and life. I also encourage students to join activities outside of academics. Whether it’s a sports team or a club, being involved helps students connect with others and be more well-rounded. It is important to have hobbies and a life outside of studies,” he said. Mr. Patterson also encourages students to challenge themselves by taking advanced classes and helping others who may struggle. “I encourage students to take harder classes, like AP courses. These classes help them meet requirements and gain knowledge for college and work. I also suggest that students help their classmates who are having a hard time. Teaching others helps them understand the material better and prepares them for future challenges,” he explained.
These stories show that the journey to becoming a senior is full of challenges but also opportunities. Students like Paolo, with the support of dedicated teachers like Ms. Morel and counselors like Mr. Patterson, shows that every challenge is a chance to learn and grow. It is important to stay disciplined, take every chance to grow, and support each other to succeed. In the end, these efforts help not just to achieve academic goals but also to build confident individuals ready for the future.
