Take Action Against Guns

Karen Galindo

As a student, you would think that going to school 6 hours a day, for 5 days a week would be a safe environment for you. Many Americans agree that guns should be banned or at least implement security measures in schools. Many school staff and students get killed by these horrible guns, which not a lot of people can stop from bringing them to school . After learning about many massacres that happened in America, we should have stricter gun laws and background checks in order to keep our country safe.

I think that weapons show a threat to children since they run the risk of losing their lives or making it easier to take other lives so people should not have weapons.

Guns make it easy to kill or injure a person, or even many people, in a short timeframe.  There was a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022, where 19 students and two teachers died after a gunman barged into their building. According to School Shootings Reach Record Level, Data Show Congress later passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which President Joe Biden signed in June. It included new gun-sale restrictions and new funding for school mental health programs. “It is time to act,” warned the head of the US executive during his televised speech from the White House.  Pro-gun Americans often cite mental illness, not guns, as the cause of school shootings. They argue that perpetrators of shootings are almost always mentally ill. In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, for example, the Trump administration stated that mental illness is the primary cause of shootings. There is a wide range of mental disorders such as mood and anxiety and mania disorders that compound the problems that shooters face. They feel the need to act out to show the world how they feel and how painful their problems are. These shootings continues to increase with the passage of time and we need to stop this with the help of the authorities since the families are the ones who suffer from these shootings which are caused by people who are not mentally well.

It is very easy for most people to get a gun in the United States.  There is no official figure for how many Americans own a firearm because federal law prohibits a registry of private citizens. According to surveys by the Pew Research Center and Harvard University, 40% of Americans confirm that they or someone in their household has a gun. A report by the Swiss based Small Arms Survey notes that US citizens own 393 million guns, ranking the country first in the world in firearms per capita. Another study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington revealed that the North American country was second only to Brazil in the total number of deaths from firearms. This is a problem for the country as access to firearms in the home increases the risk of unintentional firearm-related deaths and injuries among children.  An SSRS poll, published by CNN, revealed that 70 percent of the population supports much stricter gun laws. While 27 percent oppose it.

Gun control must be taken into account since it is one of the problems that the United States has since each year there is an increase in murders in schools, supermarkets, homes, etc. For this reason we must provide solutions to these murders which affect many people and make the government restrict a law that young people cannot buy weapons or own one since it is very easy for them to go to the store and buy a weapon. There should also be more security in the schools since it is one of the main places where there are murders
